Founded in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Blu Gorilla Tattoo was created by co-owners Tim Dennis and Alyx Baranow after relocating to the Lowcountry of South Carolina. Together, they opened Charleston's first legal tattoo studio since the city's mid-1960s tattoo ban—helping usher in a new era for tattooing in the Holy City.

Blu Gorilla was built on a foundation of traditional tattoo values, professional standards, and community presence. With roots in the New Orleans tattoo scene and years of experience tattooing across the United States, the shop blends old-school craftsmanship with modern technique and a welcoming, inclusive environment.

For nearly 18 years on the Charleston peninsula, Blu Gorilla has been voted Best Tattoo Shop by the Charleston City Paper for 14 years, as chosen by local readers. Over time, the studio has also welcomed a diverse range of clients—from first-time walk-ins to touring musicians, professional athletes, and longtime collectors.
